AO3 bookmarks vs subscriptions
Two AO3 features, two completely different jobs — and a lot of readers (understandably) confused. Here's the short version.

When to use a bookmark
- You finished a fic and want to find it again later.
- You want to leave a public rec — with notes, tags, and a star rating other readers can see.
- You want a quiet to-read list (mark the bookmark private — only you can see it).
When to use a subscription
- It's a WIP and you want to know when it updates.
- You want to follow authors for every new work they post.
- You don't need organization — just an email when something new drops.
What neither does
Here's the gap most readers eventually run into:
- Remember which chapter you left off on.
- Allow you set personal thresholds for when to be notified ("binge-ready only, please")
- Filter the dozens of update emails so you have an at-a-glance view of everything going on with the fics you love.
How readers fill the gap
Spreadsheets are the most common workaround — and the most painful. A few people maintain a separate browser-bookmarks folder of their AO3 bookmarks (cursed, but workable). - Can AO3 authors see who bookmarked their work?
- Authors can see public bookmarks and any notes left on them. They cannot see private bookmarks — those are visible only to you.
- Do bookmarks notify me when a story updates?
- No. Bookmarks are just a saved list. To get update notifications, you also need to subscribe to the work.
- Can I subscribe to a finished work?
- Technically yes, but subscriptions only fire on new chapters or new works — a one-shot that's already complete won't trigger any future emails.
- How do I keep track of which chapter I'm on across WIPs?
